June, 2001

There was only one main thing that happened this month. We went on vacation. We drove the van all the way to Colorado Springs, Colorado. We were gone for one week and our grandparents took care of all the animals. We left on one afternoon after my dad got home from work. We packed up and got on the road pretty soon. By 8:00 we were at Tim and Sandy Smiths house in Salem, Illinois and spent the night. We played board games and ate ice cream. The next morning we left for Branson, Moussouri. About half way through Moussouri we stopped at Meramec caverns. The caverns were very big and it was a long tour which lasted a good hour. The whole cave was over 15 miles long. The tour guide showed us a show on the wall that was very neat. After that we drove the rest of the way to Branson. We got a hotel and we watched the Baldknobbers show that was funny and music. After the show we went back to the hotel and got pizza and went swimming in the pool. In the morning we started for Dodge City, Kansas. We stopped at Independence, Kansas at Laura Ingles Wilder's homestead when she was a little girl. They rebuilt there house in the same spot and they built it how she described it in her books. We stopped at Greensburg, Kansas to see the worlds largest hand dug well that was 109 feet deep and 32 feet in diameter. It was dug in the late 1800's and was used as city water for a while but now they only use it to water the plants. We walked down one hundred and five steps to get to the bottom and there was still water in it. In Dodge City we went to the old Dodge City and saw a gunfight and a show. We got a hotel and the next morning we were off to Colorado Springs. We stopped at Bent's old fort and saw a rebuilt fort made out of adobe that was a trading post about 100 years ago along the Arkansas River but was burnt down in a fire. When we finally got to Colorado Springs we went to our grandma's house and we spent the night with them. The next afternoon we went to our Aunt Sherry's house and spent the night. We had a lot of fun seeing our cousins. The next morning all of us went to the fossil beds and saw neat things. Then all of us went to our grandma's house and had hamburgers and hot dogs. We played croquet a lot and had fun. That night the Hoggs left and we told them good-bye. We stayed at grandma's that night and left for home the next morning. We stayed with Roger in Kansas City at a hotel and had hamburgers for supper and we played a game. The next day we got home in the middle of the afternoon. Overall, we had fun.
